Biography of Principals

Hugh Catchpole

Born on the 26th of May, 1907 Mr. Hugh Catchpole was a scholar, educator, humanitarian, and philanthropist. In 1928, after earning his Master’s degree from Oxford University on a scholarship, he began working as a teacher at the Rashtriya Indian Military College in Dehra Dun, India (RIMC). He became the Principal in 1948. He was nominated by his former students, then at various senior leadership positons in the newly created Pakistan to become the he Founding Principal of Cadet College Hasanabdal. Having established CCH on a firm footing, from 1954 – 58, he went on to serve as Principal of PAF College, Sargodha till….. In…., he joined, Abbottabad Puclic School as Head of English Department. Mr Hugh Catchpole was awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) on December 31, 1980, the Order of the British Empire on January 1, 1971, the Sitara-e-Imtiaz on March 23, 1979, and the highest civil award of Pakistan, the Hilal-i-Imtiaz on June 15, 2007, for his commitment to and advancement of education in Pakistan. He died on ….and is buried, as per his wishes, in Cadet College Hasanabdal.

 

SQUADRON LEADER MIRZA NISAR ALI BEG (R)

Mirza Ali Beg was born in Lahore on June 15th, 1908. He earned a BSc in Science from Islamia College in Lahore and an MSc in zoology from the University of Calcutta. Mr. Mirza Nisar Ali Beg began his professional career in education as a lecturer at the Emerson College, Multan in 1939. He was given a commission as a pilot in the Royal Indian Air Force in 1943. He served in Burma, Vietnam, and Bangkok. Mr. Mirza Nisar Ali Beg joined Cadet College Hasanabdal in 1956 and, apart from holding various positions served as Principal from 1958 to 1959.

 

A.W.E.Winlaw (M.A.) OBE

Born in Sydenham, London, on February 8th, 1914. Ashley William Edgell Winlaw attended Winchester College and St. John’s College in Cambridge for his early education. He was an avid sports fan who played football for Cambridge University and minor County cricket. His teaching career began in England at Shrewsbury School in 1936. In 1940, he joined the army and joined the First Armored Division in the Eighth Army. Mr Winlaw served in the Special Troops, undertook parachutist training, and spent two years in Greece operating with local “guerilla” forces. After VE Day, He worked on a special assignment with Allied agents based in Germany. He had joined the Sixth Airborne Division for the Rhine crossing in Germany and got promoted to Lt. Col.

Lt. Col. A.W.E Winlaw (R) resumed his teaching career after the war. He worked as a Master at Rugby School in England from 1945 to 1954 and Kent School in the United States from 1954 to 1959. In 1959 he was appointed Principal Achimota School, Ghana and in …..he took up the position of Principal Cadet College.

 

Lt. Col. J.D.H. Chapman, M.B.E. M.A. (Oxon)

Born in North Britain, Lt. Col. John Drummond Hay Chapman attended Manchester Grammar School. From there, he transferred to Keble College, Oxford Senior Scholar, where he earned his B.A. and M.A. His next stop was Keble College, where he was an Oxford Senior Scholar and earned his B.A. and M.A. while also participating in Association Football, Rugby, and Junior Boat Racing for his college. Dates??? Upon earning his commission in the British army, he held several regimental and staff positions in infantry and armored forces. He also spent time attached to the Royal Air Force, Junior Leaders’ Battalion as an instructor and as Senior and Chief Instructor at Senior Officers’ School in both the United Kingdom and Australia.

After retiring from the Army, he was appointed as a History tutor at the newly established college in Bramshill, England where he rose to the positions of Senior Teacher, Director of International Studies, and Director of Studies. In Jan 1959, he was appointed Principal Cadet College Hasan Abdal, where he worked until Dec 1964.

 

Colonel N.D Hasan

Col Niaz-ud-Din Hasan was born in Batala, East Punjab, in 1919 and received his early education there before enrolling in the Government College Lahore in 1935. He earned a Double Master’s Degree in English literature and Persian before enrolling as a cadet in the Indian Army at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. During World War Two, he was commissioned in the Punjab regiment and posted to Akyab Front, Burma, where he served till independence of Pakistan. In 1948, he was selected as a Platoon Commander at Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul. It was here that he chose to transfer to the Army Education Corps because of his passion for education and literature. Colonel N.D Hasan served at Inter Services Selection Board, Kohat as well as Principal of Jhenidah Cadet College and Faujdarhat Cadet College, both located in erstwhile East Pakistan. In 1969, he was appointed Director of Studies at PMA, Kakul. He was selected to head Cadet College Hasanabdal Cadet College in 1970 and remained until 1979. He spent his final years serving as Principal Aitchison College, Lahore until 1982.

 

Shaukat Sultan

Mr. Shaukat Sultan was born in Lahore in 1931 and attended Mozang High School in Lahore. He earned a Master’s Degree in Mathematics in 1951 and began teaching in October 1952 at Military Wing, Government College, Montgomery (Sahiwal), the forerunner of Cadet College Hasanabdal which shifted to CCH in April, 1954. Mr. Shaukat advanced to the position of Vice Principal holding all key roles and, in 1979, was appointment Principal. After his retirement in 1982 he went on to serve as Principal Crescent Model High School for the next 20 years.

 

Brigadier Syed Naseer Uddin, Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) (Retd)

Brig Syed Naseer Uddin finished his education in English at Aligarh Muslim University in 1946 and was appointed lecturer in English for the next five years. During this time, he also did his M.A. in Psychology, L.L.B and attended London University to study English Phonetics and Phonology. In 1951, he immigrated to Pakistan, and joined the Pakistan Army in the Army Education Corps. He retired from the army in 1983, and was appointed Principal Cadet College Hasanabdal where he served till 1988.

 

Zafar Ali Shah

Zafar Ali Shah was born on March 5, 1930, in Jalandhar, Punjab (India). He got his Master’s degree in Chemistry from Government College, Lahore. Upon graduation he joined the Pakistan Ordnance Factories, Wah, from where, in 1961, he joined Cadet College Hasanabdal. Mr Zafar Ali Shah also got an opportunity to teach in the United Kingdom in 1965 t Fettes College in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was appointed Vice Principal in 1984 and Principal in 1988 eventually in 1993.

 

BRIG SYED SHAH BABUR (R)

Kit No. 119 Brig Syed Shah Babur was a joined Cadet Collage Hasanabdal in 1st Year in the 10th Entry and was assigned to Iqbal wing. He joined in the Army in November 1959 and was commissioned in the Signal Corps, where he served for 30 years. He successfully completed the Telecommunications Course at the School of Royal Signals in the United Kingdom, the Command and Staff Course, and the Armed Forces War Course at the National Defence College in Rawalpindi, and held the positions of instructor PMA, instructor Command and Staff College in Quetta, commanded an infantry brigade, and commandant College of Signals in Rawalpindi. He was the first Abdalian to be appointed as Adjutant of this alma mater in April, 1967. He was chosen as Principal CCH in 1993 and served till 2002.

 

SYED DILSHAD HUSSAIN

Mr. Syed Dilshad Hussain got his early education from Amir-ud-Daula Islamia High School, Lucknow, and completed his Matriculation from Baring Christian High School Batala in 1947. After independence, he got enrolled in Government College Sahiwal and later Master’s in History from Government College Lahore. He joined Cadet College Hasanabdal as an instructor on the 8th of April, 1954. In 1982, he took retirement from CCH and joined Fauji Foundation College as its founder Principal. He took on the office of the Principal Cadet College in August, 2002 and served till October 2007.

 

Air Commodore Tayyab Naeem Akhtar (Retired)

Born on 6th December, 1948 in Rawalpindi, Air Commodore Tayyab NAeed Akhtar PAF Lower Topa in 1961 in 8th class and studied there up to his F.Sc, thereafter joining the Pakistan Air Force Academy in 1966. He graduated as a Pilot in 1968. During his service, he held important appointments which included Commandant College of Flying Training, PAF Academy Risalpur, Assistant Chief of Air Staff Training, Project Director for The Induction Of K-8 Trainer Air Craft, Rear Air Headquarters Peshawar, and Base Commander, PAF Base, Kohat. After he retired from Air Force, he was appointed Project Director Shaheen School System and Director Admin, HR & Welfare from 2003 – 2006. In 2006, he was selected and appointed Principal Cadet College Hasanabdal which he continued to serve till 2009.

 

MOHAMMAD ASIF MALIK

Mr. Mohammad Asif Malik was born in Lahore on 2 October, 1943. He received his early education from Presentation Covent High School Rawalpindi. In 1959, he joined Government College Lahore and spent the next six years there and left the College in 1965 after doing his Master’s degree in Physics. He joined Cadet College Hasanabdal a in August 1965 as Lecturer of Physics, He left Cadet College Hasanabdal in 1975 and headed toward Nigeria where he worked for 8 years as Principal Education Officer. In 1987, he was selected as Project Director and Principal of Cadet College Mastung. After leaving Mastung, in 1990, he took over as Principal of Lawrence College Ghora Gali. In 1998, he was designated as Principal of Pakistan College in Abu Dhabi. He returned in 2002 and took over as Principal of Sadiq Public School, Bahawalpur. From 2009 to 2013, he served as Principal Cadet College Hasanabdal. In 2013, he took up the assignment of Principal WAPDA Cadet College Tarbela.
